Letter from the principal of Karen Adventist Academy

July 31, 2003

Dear Friends,

It is my pleasure to share with you the needs of our Karen Adventist Academy (KAA) which is situated on the banks of the Moei River. The school is located on the Thai side of the Thai-Myanmar border. First I would like to inform you about the history of this school. The Karen Adventist Academy was established in the year of 1980 with only 7 students and a teacher. At that time, the school was located at Hee Thay Kee vilage, on the Myanmar side of the Moei River. In 1998 it had to move to one of the refugee camps in Thailand. This camp is one of the small Karen refugee camps in Thailand with a population of 10,000.

In this camp there are 6 primary schools. KAA is one of 3 high schools. KAA is an Adventist Mission School. There are 16 teachers and 282 students from Kindergarten to grade 10. The school buildings are made of bamboo and some other natural materials, therefore it doesn't remain strong for a long time. Every year we have to put on a new roof. This does not cost much, but we do not have the means of earning income in the camps. We also do not charge school fees because the parents of our students do not have money. We pay our teachers a small subsidy and Thailand Mission helps us with fifty percent of the teacher's subsidy. The subsidy for our teachers is [included with] this letter.

The school has a high spiritual emphasis and is an Adventist light to the camp community. Every year we have baptisms as a result of the ministry. We are in need of equipment. I am sending you this request and humbly invite you to lend your helping hands to become a financial partner in this much-needed ministry. Your contribution in small or big amount would mean a lot to us.

May the Lord bless you all.

Sincerely yours in Christ,
Sahdee Panommasanam
Principal

The names of KAA teachers and their monthly subsidy in US dollars

The total expense for each month is $367.00

The total expense for the teacher's subsidy in a year is $4404.00. Our teachers' subsidy is not much but it is a big problem for us as we are unable to earn income in the camp.
